Research Finds Consumers Still Indulge in Chocolate, Despite the Economy
In this economy, chocolate isn't going anywhere - except home with consumers who continue to buy this tantalizing treat!
Research from the National Confectioners Association finds that chocolate sales are up and growing. People refuse to relinquish this simple indulgence, since many are forced to give up so much more in an effort to rein in expenses. By comparison, throwing a chocolate fondue party is a much more affordable entertaining option than dining at a five-star restaurant. Buying a gourmet chocolate truffle is more satisfying and much less expensive then springing for a designer handbag that might cost hundreds of dollars.
Consumer Spending Continues to Support Chocolate
The dire state of the economy has retail sales depressed, including jewelry and designer clothes. But chocolate sales have either remained steady or increased during this recession. Although chocolate is considered an indulgence rather than a necessity (although we and other chocoholics would argue with this statement), it is an indulgence that is both affordable and delicious. People need cheering up while stocks plummet, and a savory chocolate truffle can really do the trick.
National chocolate sales are projected to hit $17 billion in 2009, and the National Confectioners Association says Easter candy sales will increase from $1.846 billion in 2008 to $2 billion in 2009. Even big names like Hershey, Cadbury and Nestle have experienced significantly larger profits from 2008!
It helps that chocolate is so entrenched in various holidays and traditions that people who might avoid buying holiday decorations will probably still indulge in seasonal chocolate candy. Easter, for example, just wouldn't be the same without a delicious chocolate bunny. This trend isn't new, however. During the Great Depression, candy companies didn't suffer like many other businesses because people facing economic strife still want to indulge in a treat.
Good News for Chocolate Fountain Rental Businesses
Since people obviously don't stop enjoying chocolate just because the economy is bad, then it stands to reason that they will continue to enjoy dipping sweet and savory treats into commercial chocolate fountains. For example, charities trying to raise money through a benefit can attract donors with a beautiful and delicious chocolate fountain. A bride on a budget can afford a chocolate fountain - which gives the most visual result for any type of catering investment.
Although people might trim an event budget, dessert is always a crowd pleaser. The next time a client considers what should be cut for a menu, suggest a chocolate fountain dessert display instead of serving a full meal. Everyone loves chocolate, and the great variety of dipping treats, which usually includes various fruits, will balance guests' chocolate cravings with healthy dipping treats.
People will always buy chocolate, regardless of the economy. And with the love of chocolate, who can resist a beautiful, decadent, flowing chocolate fountain rental?
